Reading Bass Clef Ledger Lines – Gulp!

It’s not very difficult to learn the bass clef ledger lines.  If you have been keeping up on practicing your note reading skills, this next step will be fairly simple.  All we are going to do is keep using a tool you are already using and apply it to the ledger lines.

What tool is this?  It is the musical alphabet: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. As you move up the staff, you go forward in the alphabet.  As you go down the staff, you move backwards through the alphabet.  This same principle applies to the ledger lines as well.

Let’s figure out the bass clef ledger lines above the staff.  The first step is to find a note on the staff you can identify right away.
bass clef ledger linesLook at the very top line of the staff.  A note that sits on that line is A.  Move to the very next space sitting on top of the staff saying the next note in the alphabet.  That space note is B.

Now, do a few more like this and see what you get.  The first ledger line you see above the staff is C with the next space being D.  The second ledger line is E followed by the space note F.  Keep working your way forward through the musical alphabet to figure out the rest.

Take a look at the bottom of the staff.  The bottom line is G.  Now, we are going to move backwards through the alphabet.  The space note hanging below the staff under G is the letter that comes before G in the alphabet, F.  The first ledger line you see below that is E.  The next space is D and the second ledger line is C.

It’s easy, right?  Okay, so it does take a little bit of time to figure it out.  Believe me, its well worth it if you want to be able to read music well.

Keep practicing reading the notes in the bass clef ledger lines and pretty soon you will see them the same way you see the notes on the staff.  All notes will appear equal with no notes being any more difficult than others to read.  Just remember that anything worth doing does take a little hard work, practice and patience.  I know you can do it!
